When developing products that deal with extremely sensitive data, security is important. The field that we are in has data that is extremely personal. Unfortunately, the existing solutions on the market have fallen short in making these devices secure – some even using unencrypted connections to devices, and almost all directly talking to devices through open ports on a user’s home router. Not only is this insecure, but it can be restricted by internet service providers.
Kjendra was designed differently. We recognize the importance of having the edge-based approach allowing for interaction with individual devices and preventing server overloading. At the same time, we recognized that security was paramount in this field. What we developed is a state-of-the-art solution that allows unparalleled security while minimizing server load.
All devices are controlled through the data from the server. This data is processed by the Kjendra Core, which creates a secure connection between the house and the server periodically. This ensures that the server is not constantly being hammered by traffic by each individual device, minimizing server load. Also, the Kjendra Core handles many of the routine tasks that the server would usually have to do. This allows a lower-cost yet secure individual device, and more efficient server usage.
By having a single connection between the server and a household, it minimizes the open sockets into a house, preventing network attacks. It also allows for greater data encryption on the data stream since it is a single data stream. Also, using the server, there is a buffer between the devices and the controller, preventing a controlling device (i.e. smartphone, PC, or tablet) from having its communication hacked and directly affecting the integrity of the security of the devices.
Our design is not only more efficient than other solutions on the market, but provides a far more secure alternative to existing market solutions. And when it comes to your very personal data, that security is important.
